The first four songs feature distinctive individuals: The Ballad of Joey Guest relates the deeds of a quarrelsome priest; Dad’s Song, a father’s worry for his son in the Great War; The Bike Song, the delights of a young Wolverton Works seamstress; and Here is Jack, the poignant story of a musical grandfather. The next four songs have a rural base: children’s daily chores in Awake and Arise; the still-feudal arrangement in Master and Servants; the pride of raising prize cattle in The Stockman; and the touching romance of When Dick Met Alma. Finally, two songs are set in the Second World War: Safety in Numbers explores the enigma of Bletchley Park’s Alan Turing; and In the Event of an Air-Raid evokes the chaos of community defence planning!
